There is more obvious and sillier things to build a trans reading of the film on—Mitsuha wishing to be reincarnated as a boy in Tokyo, Taki enjoying having breasts so much—but it is striking how much more comfortable the two leads are in each other’s skins. We are told that Taki is normally brash and quick to get into fights, but we only ever actually see that side of him when he is in Mitsuha’s body, and Mitsuha is similarly much more assertive with Miki than she is with anyone in her own life, or than Taki is with her either.
