Perfect Blue ★★★★☆

The last Satoshi Kon feature film that I hadn’t seen. It’s a shame that he died so young and did not have the opportunity to make more. The film is fairly horrible in its handling of dissociative identity disorder and its use of ugliness as grotesquely and personal evil, but unfortunately that is not at all unusual. But it is utterly gripping in its depiction of Mima unraveling as she gets ground down by her treatment as a woman and a celebrity. Definitely something I’d be keen to rewatch to pick apart earlier scenes with a better understanding of the whole.
