Well whatever they’re here for, it’s turning into a riot. Maybe they are just here for control. If they can turn a campus protest into a shooting war…

I don’t think I noticed how much this film is about the Vietnam War the first time I watched it. The depiction of the military, the imagery of the flamethrowers and the self-immolating priest, the inability to distinguish “civilian” and combatant and the callous disregard for life that makes everything worse. It is, in part, the Vietnam War visited upon home soil.
