Amusing bug/weirdness in Phantasy Star Online that requires a bit of context.

There are three species you can play, Human, Newman, and Android. Androids can't use techniques (magic) so they get a few bits to make up for that, they regenerate health while standing still (useless), they have traps (very useful), they're immune to paralysis and poison (good) and they also get a boost to special attacks on the highest difficulty. I don't know why this boost only applies on the highest difficulty, but PSO is one of those games where the top difficulty is kind of the "real" game, you can start playing it at level 80 and the max level is 200, so you're gonna spend most of your time there. Anyway, special attacks are attached to weapons and you could probably guess a lot of the effects, the ones we care about are things with a power expressed as a percentage, which are usually their chance to activate. For example, the Freezing special comes in four strengths, with power levels of 32%, 48%, 64%, and 80%. Androids add a flat 30% to these power values, that's how their boost is implemented, so 48% becomes 78% and 80% becomes 110% (these chances are modified by resistances, so going over 100 does mean something). That's the rule, Androids add a flat 30% to the power level of any special attack that has a % power level.

Enter the Devil's and Demon's specials. These are super useful special attacks which rather than doing damage based on your stats, just immediately cut your target's health in half or to one quarter of its current value. Super useful for beefy enemies! As an effect that just triggered every time you hit, this would probably be super overpowered so they have a 50% chance to activate on a hit. You would be forgiven for thinking that the Android +30% bonus would be added onto that 50% chance, so for Androids these specials activate 80% of the time. You'd be wrong. The actual value stored as the power value of the Devil's and Demon's special attacks is the % of current health that the enemy's health is set to. So Devil's is 50% (as in it cuts health to half), and Demon's is 25% (as in it cuts health to one quarter). There's no exception for these attacks, so the client adds 30% to their power levels, thus reducing the amount of damage actually done such that the more powerful Demon's special attack is less powerful for an Android (doing 45% damage) than the less powerful Devil's is for any other character.

I just think that's interesting.
