Haste ★★★★☆
It is shocking how much I loved Haste despite hating its entire roguelite structure. The feeling of flow and momentum it engenders and makes seem effortless is enthralling. It is up there with Spark the Electric Jester 3 and Pseudoregalia with perfecting the joy of movement in three dimensional space and stringing together entire levels of perfect motion is a sublime joy.
But unfortunately it is also a roguelite and I do note like the structure of long runs made or broken by an unlucky difficulty spike or trivialised by the random draw of powerful upgrades. It doesn’t help that the currency for buying permanent upgrades is doled out in such miserly amounts.
To its credit I think the fact that you are given your progression map up front and able to plot out your entire run in advance rather than pausing to do it after every level does allow it to keep momentum going without the structure getting too much in the way of rhythm of the moment to moment thrill of running, but obviously I would just prefer is the game was structured differently in the first place.
