The businesspeak nonsense burbled on. It was impossible to listen to against the background of the wallpaper. It was amazing how utterly without features it was; looking at one wall was like looking at any wall. She wasn’t even sure which direction she was facing.

Something I really like doing as part of writing The Erotic Mind Control Story Hour is to highlight how varied and playful the writing scene can be even for something like niche fetish fiction. The Erotic Mind Control Story Archive has been going for three decades and people have explored the ideas of erotic hypnosis, mind control and brainwashing in myriad of ways. The styles and forms are ever-varied, as are the methods of control that these stories explore. If you can think of any instance of brainwashing, manipulation, or possession that you have ever seen in fiction, someone has written an eroticised version of it; classical hypnosis, subliminal messages, enchantments, brain implants, alien pathogens, magic typewriters that rewrite reality, it goes on. And sometimes authors like to get a bit silly, deliberately stretching credulity or exaggerating tropes to the point of absurdity.

The Beige Wallpaper by VWscribble features office décor that is so utterly dull and depressing that it shuts off one’s brain and makes one both utterly apathetic and open to suggestion. Charlotte attends an interview for a modelling gig and finds herself completely fixated on the featureless, beige walls off the waiting room and finds herself unable to muster the will to object to the sexual advances of her interviewer, what would even be the point? If she goes along with it maybe she can just get this over with and get out of here. Even as the requests get more and more explicit she just cannot think of anything better to do while the tasteless wallpaper assaults the inside of her skull, nodding along like she’s trapped in an hours-long work meeting that just won’t end, except that the business meeting is a threesome.

Backloggd has annual game of the year events and occasional “flashback” events where people are invited to choose the top games for a given year in the categories of gameplay, narrative, art direction, soundtrack, multiplayer and overall game of the year. I’ve enjoyed taking part in a few of these events and a few months ago Backloggd added the ability to create game of the year lists for past years that they’ve done events for. All of my picks can be found on my Backloggd profile.

Like my other annual picks I’m being somewhat strategic in choices, preferring not to double up awards for individual games other than in a few places where the game of the year also gets one of the other prizes, so Transistor is overlooked for best art direction for 2014 because I already gave it best soundtrack. That said I didn’t take these too seriously and some picks are more tongue in cheek than others.

A couple of years are also missing multiplayer picks because I just don’t play that many multiplayer games and I don’t think that I have played any multiplayer games from those years. I am surprised that I was able to fill out some of the lists at all to be honest, considering various lulls I’ve had in my gaming habits over the years. But I think I’m fairly happy with these lists as they are and I’m looking forward to future events when the site does them.

This post discusses and shows comics that are misogynistic, transphobic, anti-Semitic and fascistic.

If I there is a throughline to the writing on this bog (other than depression and Sonic the Hedgehog shitposts) it’s me gradually learning to reject shame around sex, and today I would like to talk about an awful, hateful webcomic as a cautionary tale about what happens if you just let that shame fester, instead.

Sinfest is a webcomic drawn by Tatsuya Ishida that has been running daily, with, as far as I am aware, no breaks, since the 17th of January 2000. I will give credit where credit is due: That is a very impressive feat. I will not be giving the comic credit for much else. It has become an utterly vile piece of propaganda over the years, but let’s start from the beginning.

Wannabe Bill Watterson

The first decade of Sinfest’s publication is characterised by it presenting itself as an edgy, alternative newspaper comic strip, though it never managed to get picked up for publication outside of its own website.

Sinfest - 26th of January 2000. Ishida’s political journey can be traced from here.

Much like newspaper comics It even had bigger, full-colour Sunday strips:

Sinfest - 20th of September 2009. You might already be seeing a pattern emerge.

These two strips are not representative of the whole comic, there is a large variety of topics, bits, characters and storylines that emerge throughout Sinfest’s run, but the temptation and sinfulness of women’s bodies runs through the whole thing. Ishida loves drawing sexualised women but is never fully comfortable with doing so. Initially, as seen above, irony is used to distance himself from it. The pinup is part of a joke about horny men, the demon girls, Fuchsia and Blue, are a temptation that is comedically rebuffed. But as storylines for these characters evolve, desexualisation is used as a shorthand for goodness and turning away from sin and evil. Fuchsia starts to lose her interest in torturing the souls of the damned and fall for a boy, and as she does she starts to dress much more cutely and innocently.

This line of thinking eventually leads to Ishida’s embrace of radical feminism.

This might read as a joke making fun of the girl on the tricycle for being unreasonable and hypocritical for lambasting a woman for her choice in fashion, but no, this is meant sincerely, even if presented in a humorous way.

In this period Monique, midriff pictured above, becomes a political lesbian and her one sapphic relationship is depicted as entirely sexless, pure. Lesbians don’t find each other sexy, only men do and that’s evil! Sexualisation in general is somewhat toned down in this period, but Ishida still sometimes indulges in showing how awful the patriarchy is by drawing some sexy, sexy, fembots who need to be rescued by The Sisterhood, who are made of of childlike—and thus desexualised and innocent—militant feminists.

Sinfest - 24th of February 2013.

SWERF

Eventually Ishida focuses specifically on being anti-sex work and introduces Johnbies, framing the position of decriminalising of prostitution as the position of brain-dead, entitled men who just want access to women’s bodies.

Sinfest - 8th of May 2018.

Which, of course, gives Ishida licence to draw some lithe, seductive strippers and hookers to illustrate how vile and immortal sex-positivity is.

Sinfest - 15th of May 2018.

Inevitably this obsession with protecting women’s vulnerable, hot bodies from evil men evolves from SWERFdom to TERFdom.

Sinfest - 7th of June 2019.

Transition is portrayed as an enforcement of the gender binary, enforcing sexualised, submissive hyper-femininity on women and aggressive hyper-masculinity on roided-out, sex addicted men.

And Johnbies start being used as a shorthand for people brainwashed by gender ideology.

Sinfest - 10th of October 2021. What the fuck is evening happening here?

Vaccines, gender, oestrogen-riddled vegan burgers, people who are verified on Twitter, Nazis, the sexualisation and subjugation of women, religious dogma. These are all the same thing. These are all the woke mind virus and it’s coming for your children! It doesn’t take very long after this for Ishida’s feminism to be indistinguishable from MAGAism.

Sinfest - 21st of August 2022.

Also just look how bad this art is. See how stiff and lifeless everything looks compared to the earlier strips. The parents don’t even look like they’re moving. How do you draw every day for two decades and get worse and worse at it? And he was so proud of the woke Legion of Doom bit that he did basically the exact same comic in June and then again two months later in August.

I don’t think I need to keep tracing the rest of Ishida’s political trajectory in detail. It will suffice to say that, like many others, his obsession with trans people lead him deeper and deeper down the conservative rabbit hole until he became an open Nazi. And I don’t mean that as a pejorative or exaggerated statement of unpleasant beliefs, I mean he genuinely thinks that the Jews are behind the fall of the West and the Third Reich was in the right.

Sinfest - 8th of April and 14th of August 2024. He loves to do echos of past strips.

I have never been a fan or follower of Sinfest, even before it’s descent into open fascism, but I would occasionally see people online discussing its weird turns and every once in a while I would have a look at it out of morbid curiosity to see how bad it could get. It was fascinating to watch someone go down this path from radfem to proudly declaring how the white race must reclaim its culture despite, as you might have guessed from the name, Ishida not being white himself. And sometimes he would drop something incredibly funny in how pathetically low-effort it was like the Gender Riddler.

But eventually Ishida published a strip I felt finally made the story of the degradation of this man’s art and soul make sense to me, that made the pieces click together in my mind, and after that I stopped having an interest in subjecting myself to his work.

White knight

Sinfest features a lot of rambling, repetitive storylines that start off self-contained an then shift suddenly back to Ishida’s bugbears (though really that has been, for a while, just The Jews), but in April of 2025 he started a riff on Snow White.

Sinfest - 1st, 3rd and 14th of April 2025.

The poison apple is overloaded as a signifier for so many things that Ishida has railed about over and over again. Liberalism is a Jewish plot to trick people into open borders to allow the great replacement, gender ideology and sex-positivity is a Jewish plot to brainwash women into being sluts, porn is a Jewish plot to weaken men, Christianity is a Jewish plot to make the West weak and gay. It is, quite frankly, as tiresome as it is vile. But what stood out to me was not Snow White herself, but the prince.

Sinfest - 25th of April and 3rd of May 2025.

The prince, on a mission to rescue Snow White from being a slutty little slut, also takes a bite of the poisoned apple and starts to fall to temptation, turning into a soyjak Johnbie the moment he sees another sexy woman and then just, dying of being horny I guess?

Sinfest - 9th and 10th of May 2025.

And I feel like this summarises the poison at the heart of Sinfest—its original sin and the constant throughout the entire thing: Ishida feels guilty over finding women sexy and enjoying sexualisation. From the early ironic sinfulness, to the feminism, the anti-trans crusade, the conservatism and the fascism, he loves drawing women’s bodies in a sexualised manner and hates himself for it. He is the prince, failing to live up to his morals and finding enemies to blame for turning women to vile temptresses that he lusts after and cannot reject the allure of. Who is sexualising all these awful whores? The Devil! The patriarchy! The sex-positivity movement! The queers! The liberals! The communists! The Jews! Not Tatsuya Ishida, certainly.

The Snow White plotline does not actually stop there—the power of true love magically saves Snow White and the prince and they become a perfect, chaste, heterosexual couple and comic kind of loses track of any kind of coherent plot as it goes into various tangents about the Jews and woke brainwashing again because Sinfest is just a very bad comic even outside of its politics—but for me that was the real end of Sinfest. I had been fascinated by seeing the TERF to Nazi pipeline laid out step by step, but with this strip I felt an understanding of it click into place about what happened here, about how shame can fester into something horrendous and evil if you refuse to face yourself over it. And also so much of the comic after this is just about Hitler being right. There’s nothing interesting or worth seeing there.

Don’t read Sinfest.

Sandustry is probably the first factory game I've played that really communicates the physicality of industrial waste, the appalling magnificence of it, for all the dinkiness of its 2D artstyle. It's the only factory game that really makes me think of post-industrial landscapes, like those colossal spoil piles above Aberllefenni. It also engineers a weird exuberance inside the concept of 'byproduct'.

It’s been added to my Steam wishlist.

CD-ROM Journal - A Trip to 90s Kansai: Exploring the XD FirstClass Network BBS — Misty De Méo

I gestured briefly at the PASSTHRU folder earlier, but I really want to dig deeper into that because this is something very cool. I said before that when you're connecting to a BBS like this, you're connecting to one system rather than the internet as a whole. This is a bit of an exception to that. FirstClass had support for what they called "relays", which allowed BBSs running the same software to talk to each other and exchange messages. It wasn't a realtime connection; this still isn't the internet. It's a little bit more like snail mail. The servers would sync with each other every day, or once every few days, fetching new replies in the conferences they were sharing and transmitting any replies that had been made from a different server. It's quite a bit more "slow internet" than we'd probably tolerate today, but in the pre-internet era the idea you could be talking to these other communities at all would have felt revolutionary.

A shorter, sillier one this time.

Old, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, is largely remembered as that movie about the beach that makes you old. I do not know anything about the plot of the film other than it features a beach that makes you old. I don’t know anyone who has actually seen it or cares about it at all other than the jokes that it spawned. It’s quite possible that you’ve seen memes about the beach that makes you old without even realising that they were inspired by a movie from an Oscar-nominated director. If you are not familiar with this then the most popular example is probably this video that it uses neural network generated voices imitating Joe Rogan and Ben Shapiro.¹

The beach that makes you old is just a very funny phrase and so it put a smile on my face when I came across a story by Mesmerciless titled The Beach that Makes You Dumb. As a work of fiction The Beach that Makes You Dumb is a fairly standard bimbofication fetish story—two recent high school graduates get directed to the eponymous beach and find themselves gradually changing in a way that is initially subtle but quickly alarming, finding it more and more difficult to think as they get turned into stereotypical, blonde bimbos. What sets it apart as a great shitpost is the use of a device not normally found in prose: As Faith starts to realise what’s happening, there’s a titlecard drop:

“I think this beach is, uh, doing stuff to us. It’s turning us into, um, like, sexy, lezzy bimbos. Or something. And, um, I think it might be making us…dumb?”

“Dumb?” Eva repeated before breaking into titters. “Like, what are you even talking about? Beaches can’t make you dumb.”

“Uh…” Faith paused, momentarily confused. Her bestie was right: beaches couldn’t make you dumb. Could they?

In case you are alarmed by that title and not up to date on Alex Jones’ vile conspiracy theory show: Satirical news site The Onion acquired Info Wars as part of a deal with the families of victims of the Sandy Hook shooting in their lawsuit against Alex Jones and have relaunched it as a satircal Youtube channel. It’s really good. There are various running plotlines throughout each stream, the two big ones being Emergency with Tim Heidecker, which is a fairly direct parody of Alex Jones’ style, and The Jim Haggerty Show, which is more of a parody of general conservative talk shows and features long time Onion character Jim Haggerty having become a conservative grifter, but there are other evolving bits throughout it including various bizarre theme songs and joke ads including ones that are stereotypical viral clips of two podcast bros. They are also selling official gay frog plushes.

🔞 EMCSH: A Proposal to the Central Humanate

This post discusses and links to fetish fiction that features sexually explicit writing involving mind control and violations of consent as well as misogyny and transphobia.

Last time on the The Erotic Mind Control Story Hour I talked about Nice to Men by Limerick and this time I am sticking with with erotic horror dealing with patriarchy and misogyny, but in a very different form. A Proposal to the Central Humanate by calledbyflowers is an epistolary story that takes the form of a policy proposal to a fascistic, patriarchal regime that seeks to “[wreath the world] in language until it can be held in one hand and seen at one glance,” and suppress and destroy anything that falls outside of its narrow understanding.

The document, written in an academic style with citations to other fictional papers, wishes to propose, during a period of increased dissent and “degeneracy”, an extension of current social control methods to “underconditioned populations”. It talks around its central point, first seeking to define womanhood and pointing out that the sociological concept of a woman is actually quite recent, dating back only about fifty years before the time of writing, when the female population started being put through mental and medical conditioning to render them docile slaves. The word woman is never capitalised, even when used at the beginning of a sentence or as part of a proper noun, and the document does not use the term man as the counterpart to woman, but “human”.

As the proposal goes on it sheds some light on the hierarchical nature of the Humanate, with the author adopting a more and more deferential and servile tone, talking around their actual point as to not suggest that their proposal would mean that they are questioning their betters or the current system, as those who question the Central Humanate are questioning the will of humanity itself and thus declaring themselves to be non-human, not of the Volk. The Humanate distils fascist and patriarchal ideals to their purest form: The rendering of dissenters and divergents into subhuman objects coupled with the belief in the correctness of the exploitation of all objects for the benefit of those deemed to be human.

It is in this that document starts to lay out its proposal more plainly and in which the kink aspects of the piece become clear: Those who have proven themselves to be degenerate and non-human could be potentially rehabilitated into society by fitting them into the category of acceptably exploitable humanoid objects: i.e., they should be made into women. This is a forced feminisation story, one that takes the trope of “failed men” or “sissies” being forced to act as women and exaggerates it to an extreme political end.

Forced feminisation as a fetish can be a complicated thing. Many men enjoy it as a form of humiliation—there is after all, an intense stigma in society (our real one, not the Humanate) against men being perceived as feminine. Even today it is one of the most shameful things to be accused of being for most men. Forcefem play and fiction also often uses exaggerated ideas of femininity and feminine and submissive roles. Not just women’s clothes but lingerie, maid dresses, collars and BDSM gear. To fail to live up to masculinity is to be feminine and to be feminine is to be dominated. These are, unfortunately, real ideas that permeate society but in kink play these ideas and anxieties that have been internalised can be explored in safe and consensual way. A Proposal to the Central Humanate also takes this to the extreme in an explicitly politicised manner.

But it can also, inversely, act as a safer-feeling way to explore gender and sexuality—exploring femininity as a form of play bound to a specific context. Many trans women, even before realising that they wish to transition, use forcefem fantasies it as a way to experiment with gender and sexuality. If the idea of being a woman is shameful or unthinkable, then these kinds of sexual fantasies can be used to sublimate those desires into something that can be enjoyed while still holding them at arm’s length, both by pushing them into the realm of fantasy and also justified in a narrative where someone else is at fault for forcing one into these things that one cannot admit to craving. Hypnokink can operate in a very similar space and the two are often used together—“sissy hypno” is an entire genre unto itself.

The characters subjected to being forcibly feminised in fetish fiction are often happy about and thankful for what has happened to them in the end, and increasingly such fiction is written by trans authors and often explicitly incorporates the idea of the victim being a closeted trans person or an “egg”, someone who experiences gender dysphoria but has not consciously realised yet that they are trans, and sometimes genuinely has their life improved by it.

And within the fiction of A Proposal to the Central Humanate the author of the report is also engaging in directing shameful desires into sexual impulses and, in this case, a policy proposal. Once the author has finally laid bare their proposal to process degenerates as women they propose a test case on a willing subject: Themself. They confess to various crimes of degeneracy, homosexual activity and fantasies of sexual submission and continue to try and argue for their own subjugation in language that attempts, at first, to keep a neutral and academic tone but quickly devolves into obvious sexual fantasy and then just drops the pretence altogether and in a reverie begs for this to be done to her, preferring some happiness in living as a subjugated woman than facing the misery and alienation as living as a man in a sick and crumbling society. Which is, as they say, a mood.

Bring back the start and select buttons

The title screen for Super Mario Bros. features the options to start a 1 player game or a 2 player game, but pressing up or down on the NES’ D-pad does nothing; instead the select is used to select which choice the player will make before hitting the start button to begin. The NES controller has two different conceptual spaces, with the D-pad and face buttons for controlling gameplay, while the start and select buttons—relegated to the more out-of-the-way middle space of the controller—are for more metatextual, system-level inputs. The Famicon’s second controller didn’t even have start and select buttons, the second player being purely concerned with the gameplay space and not the system space.

This convention did not last long. As games became more complex and switching between different screens, different contexts and different levels of abstraction became a normal part of games, using the D-pad and face buttons to navigate menus and options became the norm. Select instead became a useful, general-purpose auxiliary button; something not used as part of normal gameplay rhythms but for things like opening a map or menu screen separate from the start button, which generally also served to pause and open a pause menu if one exists.

But despite being somewhat of a holdover the labels stuck, at least for a while. The NES, SNES, Game Boy, PSX, PS2 and PS3 all had start and select buttons. The Mega Drive, Saturn, Dreamcast, N64 and Gamecube all had start buttons. Even if different consoles had different conventions for how to label their face buttons at least everyone agreed on what to call the auxiliary buttons in the middle of the controller, whether there was one or two of them.

Microsoft broke this convention with the Xbox. Instead of a select button the Xbox had a back button, with a glyph of left-pointing triangle to mirror the one for start (itself borrowing from Sony’s use of a play button symbol). Select had long since stopped making sense as anything other than convention, but calling it the back button was hardly any better for how the second central auxiliary button is actually used in games and this divergence would be the start of a complete breakdown in convention.

Nintendo, the originators of the convention in the first place, started assigning + and - symbols to the start and select buttons, respectively, and then moved to simply calling the buttons + and - entirely. The PS4 moved to calling them options and share and the PS5 to options and create, while the newer Xbox consoles have gone with menu and view with Valve following suit for the Steam Deck and second Steam Controller (though they’ve gone with Sony’s conventions for labelling of shoulder buttons).

No one can agree what to call these things any more and while start and select were not ideal labels for what the buttons were actually used for I don’t think these other names are any better and I am probably just going to keep calling them start and select forever.

Also the shift to making face buttons monochrome is fascist I will not elaborate on this.
